Pre-application Community Consultation
Proposals for enhancement and expansion for creative hub, shop and workspace
July 2026
Welcome
Welcome to the Abbey Road Studios Community Consultation
Thank you for taking the time to find out more about our proposals for Abbey Road Studios.
For more than 95 years, Abbey Road has continually evolved alongside the artists, composers and creators who have shaped its remarkable history. Today, the Studios remain at the forefront of music-making while supporting a wider creative community spanning music, film, technology, education and innovation.
Our proposals represent the next step in that evolution, helping Abbey Road continue to thrive while respecting the heritage that makes it one of the world’s most iconic creative destinations.
Before developing the proposals further, we are consulting with the local community, stakeholders and Westminster City Council, and we would very much welcome your feedback.
Abbey Road Studios Today
Abbey Road Studios has evolved continuously throughout its 95-year history, adapting to the changing needs of artists, audiences and the creative industries while preserving the character and significance of its historic estate.
The original Georgian townhouse at No. 3 Abbey Road was converted into a recording studio in 1931 and has since undergone a series of carefully considered adaptations, enabling the Studios to remain at the forefront of creative production and innovation.
Today, No. 3 Abbey Road is a Grade II listed building and is home to the existing restaurant, which has long served artists, studio clients and staff. No. 5 Abbey Road accommodates the Abbey Road Shop together with administrative and operational workspace.
Why Do We Need to Evolve?
Abbey Road Studios is one of the world’s most recognised cultural and creative destinations. While recording remains at its heart, the Studios have evolved into a wider creative ecosystem spanning music, film, technology, education and innovation. Through initiatives such as REDD Labs, Audiomovers and talent development programmes, Abbey Road continues to support artists, entrepreneurs and the UK’s creative industries.
This evolution is essential to Abbey Road’s long-term future. Alongside its recording studios, activities such as retail, hospitality and technology help sustain investment in world-class facilities, creative programmes and innovation.
Established in 2015, the Abbey Road Shop now welcomes more than 250,000 visitors every year. The success of the Shop has outgrown its existing accommodation, limiting the visitor experience and opportunities to better engage with Abbey Road’s growing global audience.
Abbey Road is also an internationally recognised visitor destination, with around 500,000 people visiting the iconic zebra crossing every year.
Looking ahead, international interest in Abbey Road is expected to continue growing, supported by new Beatles visitor attractions and renewed global interest in the band’s legacy. These proposals represent the next chapter in Abbey Road’s evolution, strengthening its creative community, enhancing the visitor experience and supporting the long-term future of the Studios.
The Proposals
Our proposals focus on the sensitive enhancement of Nos. 3 and 5 Abbey Road, improving accessibility, enhancing the visitor experience and creating spaces that support the continued success of Abbey Road Studios.
Together, these improvements will strengthen Abbey Road’s role as both a world-leading recording studio and an internationally recognised creative destination, while respecting the heritage and character of the estate.
The Proposals – No.3 Abbey Road
The Abbey Road Creative Hub
For decades, the restaurant at No. 3 Abbey Road has been an important part of daily life at the Studios, serving artists, studio clients and staff.
The proposals will sensitively evolve this much-loved space into the Abbey Road Creative Hub —a restaurant-led destination designed to support collaboration, creativity and cultural exchange.
Remaining fundamentally a hospitality space, the Creative Hub will provide a welcoming environment where artists, composers, producers, entrepreneurs and creative professionals can meet, work and exchange ideas. It will continue to support the day-to-day operation of the Studios while strengthening the creative community that has always been at the heart of Abbey Road.
The proposals include a modest extension of approximately 50 square metres, creating a more flexible and accessible environment while respecting the heritage of the Grade II listed building. The design has been carefully developed to retain existing access routes and protect the mature plane tree on the boundary between Nos. 5 and 7 Abbey Road.
The Proposals – No.5 Abbey Road
The proposals include the comprehensive refurbishment of No. 5 Abbey Road, creating an enhanced Abbey Road Shop across the Lower Ground, Ground and First Floors.
By extending the retail experience across three floors, the building will better serve the hundreds of thousands of people who visit Abbey Road each year while improving visitor circulation, accessibility and the overall visitor experience.
The upper floors will provide improved office and meeting space supporting the Studios and Shop operations, connected by a new lift and accessible staircase.
A modest third-floor extension will provide additional co-working and meeting space, while selected historic architectural features—including the reinstatement of original chimney pots and gable detailing—will help restore elements of the building’s historic character.
Key Elements of the Proposals
Enhanced Entrance
The entrance to No. 5 will be redesigned to create a more welcoming and accessible arrival, improving visibility from Abbey Road and the zebra crossing to help direct visitors towards the Shop and ease pedestrian congestion.
Wayfinding
Carefully integrated signage and interpretation will help visitors find the Abbey Road Shop more easily while complementing the historic character of the buildings. Improved visibility will help distribute visitors more effectively and reduce congestion around the zebra crossing.
Accessibility
Accessibility is central to the proposals. A wider entrance, new lift and accessible staircase will improve movement throughout No. 5 Abbey Road, creating a more inclusive experience for staff and visitors. Improved step-free access will also be provided within the courtyard for studio operations.
Restoring Historic Character
The proposals include the careful reinstatement of selected historic features, including original chimney pots and gable detailing, helping restore elements of No. 5’s historic character while complementing the modest new extension.
Sustainability
Sustainability is a core principle underpinning the proposals. Refurbishment works will support Abbey Road Studios’ transition to 100% renewable electricity, improve energy efficiency, reduce operational carbon and modernise building services for future generations.
